Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
