Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might look mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and swiping all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each member has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could enable the group access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that control the setting for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This means them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight players to form the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can expect discovering which adventurers will be where in the season’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
